DISTRICT COURT ORDINANCE - SECT 32

General jurisdiction in actions of contract, quasi-contract and tort

PART IV

CIVIL JURISDICTION AND PROCEDURE

Jurisdiction-General

(1) The Court has jurisdiction to hear and determine any action founded on
contract, quasi-contract or tort where the amount of the plaintiff's claim
does not exceed $1000000.

(2) In this section and in section 34, the amount of the plaintiff's claim
means the amount the plaintiff claims after taking into account-

   (a)  any set-off or any debt or demand the defendant claims or may recover
        from the plaintiff;

   (b)  any compensation, as defined in section 3 of the Employees' 
        Compensation Ordinance ( Cap 282), paid to the plaintiff under that
        Ordinance; and

   (c)  any contributory negligence, that the plaintiff admits in his
        statement of claim.

(3) The Court has jurisdiction to hear and determine any proceedings by way of
interpleader in which the amount or value of the matter in dispute does not
exceed $1000000. (Replaced 28 of 2000 s. 21. Amended L.N. 241 of 2003)
